THE POSTERS

We know that learning is the ability to acquire new information and retain it over time. The outcome of learning then is memory. So, learning happens when a memory is created or strengthened. It is imperative then, that our students know how a memory is created and how a memory is strengthened.

It is an amusing idea that the brain is designed to forget - many of our students joke that their 'brain is functioning just as it should' when they can't remember something. Clearly memory must be stable so that we can learn by building up experiences, but it also has to be flexible enough to adapt to our changing environment. We take in so much information during the day that we cannot possibly recall all of it. Unfortunately, the brain remembers only what it considers important for our survival by:

  • Repeating and revisiting
  • Giving it high emotional value
  • Giving it high interest value

This set of nine posters offers information and tips for what this means for a student in practice. The posters are:

  1. The Brain is Designed to Forget
  2. Memory and Learning
  3. Review and Refire
  4. Use the Contact Theory
  5. Use Your Senses
  6. Add Emotion to Learning
  7. Keep your Learning Anchored
  8. Process Deeply and Elaboratively
  9. Harness the Power of the Moment
